Dishwasher Detergent DIY

Are you looking for a dishwasher detergent DIY that works great and is nontoxic?

We have tried several only to be let down.  To be honest when we tried the one I’m going to share with you, I was on the fence if it would work.  We have tweaked the recipe to bare minimal ingredients.

It works great and there are only 3 ingredients!

Why DIY Dishwasher Detergent?

As you probably already know, dishwasher detergents contain harmful chemicals.  Looking to plant based dishwasher detergents are a great alternative, but are very pricey!

Since switching to our DIY we spend roughly $5 dollars per month on detergent.  Yeah!

Ingredients for Dishwasher Detergent:

  • Borax
  • Baking Soda
  • Epsom Saltdetergent ingredients: epsom salt, baking soda, and borax

We use vinegar in the rinse cycle.

The process is super easy.  We place all the ingredients in a jar and shake it like crazy.  Give a few seconds to let the mixture settle, open and fill the wash tab holder with the powder detergent.

Steps to Homemade Dishwasher Detergent:

  1. Gather your ingredients:  borax, baking soda and Epsom salt.  We have used Himalayan and other salts.  They all work.
  2. Measure 2 cups each for borax and baking soda.
  3. Measure 1/2 cup Epsom Salt.
  4. Slowly add ingredients to your jar to avoid too much of the powder in the air.
  5. Place the lid on tight.
  6. Shake vigorously for a few seconds to mix well.ingredients for diy dishwasher detergent

How Long Does the Detergent Last?

This recipe makes about 30 ounces.  It lasts us just over a week.  This is with us using it at least once a day, sometimes twice.

How to Store

We store the detergent in a recycled 32 ounce container with a screw on lid.  A screw on lid is necessary, so you can shake it up.  No further mixing or shaking is necessary after the initial shaking.
